Book Review by Vathukkat Krishnan Kutty

The book Eight Ways Home is a collection of eight short stories written by Wing Commander (Veteran) Dr. K.M. Vijayan.

The prose is lucid and subtle, rooted in the author’s military background and personal life experiences. Written in the first person, the collection follows a traditional narrative style based on keen observation, active participation, and deep character development.

The author skillfully employs the “Three Cs” of short story writing: Character, Conflict, and Change (or Context, Change, and Consequence). Throughout the narrative, history and geography are elegantly intertwined.

Themes and Analysis

Different facets of love play a pivotal role in every story. Pieces such as The Last Promise, Triangular Love, and those exploring platonic love highlight the differences in perception and judgment based on social status, ground realities, and organizational requirements.

The description of the Court Martial procedure is a classic example of this complexity. However, it is notable that when adultery is punished, there is an omission regarding the “seductor” facing punishment; this feels like a significant “amiss” in the pursuit of justice.

Highlights

  • In The Last Promise: The plot involving Sunny Cherian (the deceased) taking the author to his bungalow in his jeep is masterfully executed. The concept of “mental bilocation” adds a compelling twist to the story’s flow, leading to a superb conclusion.

  • In Triangular Love: The author highlights technical nuances, such as how missed marksmanship can raise concerns regarding infantry training standards. The unexpected consequences of the charge sheets—affecting the Range Officer, the Officer in Charge of the firing range, and the officer who issued the weapon—provide a perfect example of cause and effect.

Conclusion

While there are many other aspects to elaborate upon, I will sum up by saying that this book is the result of nuanced thinking. It is a compelling and worthwhile read.
